What to do if you know of malnourished horses?
I've found out about 7-10 horses who are malnourished (their spines are prominent, according to my source), in Davidson or Sumner County. My source is an acquaintance who used to own these horses with her husband. Since her divorce, the ex-husband has had custody but says he has been financially unable to provide proper nutrition or deworming. She (my source) says that she does not want to visit the horses anymore because they are thin and their backbones show. I asked her if her ex-husband wants to hold onto the horses and she wasn't sure, but she (correctly) assumed that the market for horses is fairly stagnant. But perhaps this means he might be willing to let go of them. Here is the problem: if the ex-husband is willing to give up the horses, who would take them? What can I do, as a one-horse owner who boards, for this many needy horses? I expect rescues are bursting at the seams at the moment. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The best thing she could do would be to approach him and see if he would be willing to let her place them in good homes. Finding homes will be hard, but if he can't feed them he needs to get rid of them.

Finding homes will be hard, but if he can't feed them he needs to get rid of them. This makes sense. What is the best way to find potential GOOD homes? If she is able to convince him, I could post a listing here and on the Chronicle of the Horse-- any other ideas?
