New with no horse... Hello everyone! My name is Kari and I live in Knoxville. I don't have a horse, but would like one in about a year. I have been riding for 20 yrs. ( friends horses ) I am not sure where to start when it comes to buying a horse. I miss riding soooo much. I don't have friends here with horses, so im not around riding. I was on another board with women who have horses, and they made me feel like I should not have a horse because I have no experiene! I have to start somewhere right? Am I wrong for wanting a horse? I hope to talk to some of you and see what you all think!!! Thanks.

welcome aboard kari! a lot of us on here got a late start, my personal belief would be start with a seasoned gelding. but, how much pasture do you have? or would you be boarding? they can't sleep in your bed ya know... i'm assuming you have a job or some type of income, horsies are expensive at times, just ask miss jet, she has one having serious problems right now.

I would be boarding. I am a stay at home mom, and my hubby is the one bringing in the income. He is a pilot and makes good money. I told him they are not cheap!!!!

Welcome! You certainly do NOT have to own a horse to join in the fun here. We offer support and encouragement for those of us who have horses, and lots of information for future owners too. I board my two horses at Spitfire Ranch in New Market, but I live in Knoxville.
8-)
Feel free to jump into any conversation~Don't be shy around any of us.
Welcome!

Welcome! I recommend finding an equine organization or two to get involved in. It's a good place to start with finding friends who can help you in your search for a horse. Most don't require horse ownership to join...I know the saddle club I am a member of does not require it. We welcome anybody with even the sligh-*test*-('") interest!

Thanks everyone for the welcome into the groups!!! I look foward to talking to you and getting to learn more about horses!!!!

Thanks again everyone. Gaits, the saddle club you are in, do they teach you to care for a horse? and riding? Is this in knoxville? Thanks

Currently they don't, but it is something we are looking to put into place sometime in the future. It IS, however, a great place to meet individuals who would be more than happy to share their knowledge with you. I know of a few that give riding lessons to friends and everyone is more than happy to answer questions. And yes, it is located in Knoxville....East Knox county in fact. We are having our monthly horse show next Saturday (May 17th). There is no admission charge, so feel free to come observe if you want. It is Riverdale Saddle Club and there is a post about it in the Upcoming Events section of the board.

please remember we do not believe there are stupid questions. we have experienced all kinds of things from runny noses , being off their feed, or just a slight limp. one person on here felt her horse was just a little "off" and when i went to see them he didn't even lay his ears back at me... yup, definately "off" for him! turns out he has a very serious problem which i think gets worse with time, but now she will be able to monitor him, knpow what to expect, and makes sure he is as comfortable as horsey possible! she even had a painting done from a pic her hubby took while she broke the sad news to the horse. yeah, we're all a LOT silly about our critters like that...
ok i'm tearing up again...
anyhoo i know of a FABULOUS and well recommended place to board in new market if they have any stalls available! pleeease come to adoption day and let someone in an hht shirt know who you are so you can start getting the feel of being around a horse, general care, etc. cowboy
s keeper is starting a back-to-basics class i think... it's in the upcoming events somewhere. good luck and i look forward to meeting you!

Kari, like Doefeather mentioned, Stephanie (aka CowboysKeeper) is going to have some basic classes on horse care. She is probly the horsiest person you'll ever meet. I swear they really do talk to her!
If you would like lessons she has a lesson horse available, and does lessons for adults and children, or even middle aged overweight women like myself. lol!
We would love to meet you!
