January 24, 2008: 5 emaciated horses were seized from 2 locations near Carmel Church, VA on Tuesday January 22, 2008 by Caroline County Animal Control. The owner of the horses, Michael Wilkerson, has been charged with 5 counts of animal cruelty.
The United States Equine Rescue League assisted Caroline County Animal Control in the seizure of the horses and transported the horses from the two locations. The horses, ranging in ages from 1 year to 32 years old, have been placed in the USERL¡¯s custody. They are being housed by the USERL at an undisclosed location where they are receiving necessary veterinary care and placed on a careful rehabilitation program. While all of the horses are emaciated, 3 are severely emaciated. It is estimated that it will take 6 to 12 months for all of the horses to recuperate and regain their health.
