Case in Pickett County
Two charged with animal cruelty On Tuesday, Jan 22, Fentress County UT Extension Agent Nathan Rich and Pickett County Deputy Jeff Flowers responded to a possible animal neglect case. Upon arriving at 6558 Cedar Grove Rd., Pall Mall, it was determined that 12 horses were being neglected. In the state of Tennessee the lowest body condition score to maintain a horse is three. According to Extension Agent Rich, all of the horses on the premises scored under three. Horse Haven of Knoxville was called to provide medical attention for four of the neglected horses at no charge to the county. Horse Haven, a non-profit organization that helps protect equine from abuse and neglect, reported that the horses were very dehydrated and malnourished. They have the horses under veterinary case and are on a re-feeding program. Hopefully they will start showing some weight improvement within the next few months. According to Pickett County Sheriff Clois Brown, the horses' owners C.T. and Haley Shaul, are being charged with 12 counts each of animal cruelty. Executive Director of Horse Haven of Tennessee Nina Margetson stated to the Press, "We really appreciate that Pickett County takes animal abuse or neglect seriously. Your county should be proud that your elected officials are willing to take a stand and help those who cannot speak for themselves."
