NASHVILLE (AP) -- A proposal to create an animal abuser registry in Tennessee has moved forward in the Legislature.
The measure sponsored by Sen. Doug Jackson (D-Dickson) unanimously passed the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday.
Jackson wants to create the registry for people convicted of aggravated cruelty toward animals, felony animal fighting or bestiality.
He says the legislation is needed because people convicted of such crimes are prone to commit other offenses, such as abusing children and women.
The companion version of the bill has yet to move in the House.
