Couple Arrested In Texarkana On Animal Cruelty Charges
An elderly couple from Tennessee who stopped in Texarkana for repair work ended up in jail on animal cruelty charges.
Police got a call from the manager of a local tire shop about horses inside a trailer the couple was towing. Greg Fett says the elderly cuple hauling the horses pulled in to the shop and wanted work done on the trailer. He says he stalled the couple and immediately called police.
Inside the 22 foot trailer, police found 11 horses. One mare, possibly pregnant and too weak to stand, was at the bottom of the trailer being trampled by the other horses.
Police arrested the couple, 64-year-old Emmons Booth and 77-year-old Betty Blackburn and charged them with animal cruelty.
They told police were hauling the horses from Memphis to an undisclosed location in Texas.
The horses are under quarantine at the Four-States Fairgrounds until they are released by a vet and will go into foster care until the case is resolved in court.
Officials say donations to help cover feeding and vet care would be helpful.
Animal welfare officials say with lots of love and proper care, these horses could be brought back to sound health.
